Agios Nikolaos is the capital of Lasithi county and it is located on the northern coast of Crete. The name came from the Byzantine chapel located at the bay of Agios Nikolaos. The economy of the region is based on tourism, olive cultivation and non-fertilized livestock farming
The islets of Agioi Pantes and Faros are an example in the Natural History of Agios Nikolaos since, while they are only a few meters away from each other, the species of flora and fauna they host have evolved differently. On the island of Aghioi Pantes, Cretan wild goats, the so called Kri Krí, have been transported since the middle of the last century, in order to keep the species clean.
