Axos is located on the southern slopes of Psiloritis, at an altitude of approximately 500 meters. It is built in amphitheatrical position, overlooking the plain between Psiloritis and Talea Mountains. It is 46 kilometers from Rethymno and 48 kilometers from Heraklion.
There are more than 10 springs in the village, with the one in the center to be the most well- known, from which it is claimed that King Etearchus, of the 7th century BC, was drinking water for a good digestion.
There is also the Wood Sculpture Museum in the center of Crete and at the foothills of Psiloritis, which is a permanent collection of the sculptor Georgios Koutantos.
