Heraklion is the capital and largest city of Crete and the largest port of the island. In Heraklion there are the headquarters of the Decentralized Administration of Crete, as well as the headquarters of the Perfecture of Crete. The main economic sectors of the city are tourism, agriculture and trade. It has an industrial area four kilometers southeast of the center.
Heraklion also has one of the busiest airports in the country (airport “Nikos Kazantzakis”) and a busy port both for passengers and merchandise.
