Ierapetra is the most populous city of Lasithi perfecture. It is also the fourth largest city of Crete and southern Greece. It is located 100 kilometers southeast of Heraklion, 242 km from Chania and 36 km south of Agios Nikolaos. The nightlife starts in the taverns of the beach and ends at bars in the narrow streets of the city. During the summer months, severa cultural events are performed, called “Kyrveia”,with numerous concerts and theater performances. At the same area there are some of the most important ecosystems in the eastern Mediterranean, including the island of Chrysi, the forest of Selekanos which is the largest and most important in Crete, and the mountains of Thripti.
The tourist resort of Makri Gialos is located 24 kilometers east of the city. The surrounding area is famous for its beaches, which unfold along a huge beach front. Almost all covered by Micrococcus black pebbles, not clinging to the feet, and the sea is usually calm. Next to town there are three beaches where you can swim.
