Plakias is a popular tourist resort, 36km south of Rethymno, which is located at the exit of a fertile plain surrounded by high mountains and dense olive groves. Next to the river Plakias empties the river Kotsifos. One of the major drivers of growth in the region is the huge beachfront area, the so-called Gialia. The main beach of Plakias is located east of the village and stretches for 1. 3km as the Cape Mouri.
West of the village, from the village to the new port Plakias, there is the second beach of Plakias, called Skinos. Skinos has many rocks and sand, which makes it perfect for spearfishing.
Near the village, the beach is organized with umbrellas, while the west is rockier. Along Skinos there is the street that leads to the nearby beach of Souda.
